Work your brain

How many of the 100 most common words in the English language can you guess in five minutes? Harder than you might think, but pretty fun to see how you fare.

Going for the gold

For the next two weeks, the 2008 Summer Olympics are taking place in Beijing, China, as I’m sure everyone’s aware by now.

The reviews of the opening ceremonies are in, and apparently they left no stone unturned – it was, by many accounts, a spectacular and moving event.

It’s going to be an exciting and inspiring couple of weeks coming up, and I’ve noted the times for a few of my favorite events: cycling, boxing and gymnastics – what event are you most looking forward to?

Did someone say pickanick basket?

You don’t have to be Yogi Bear to enjoy a nice, full basket of foodstuffs to enjoy outside. And with plenty of sunny summer days still ahead of us, what better way to enjoy the outside than to dine al fresco?

Cooking Light has some great pointers and recipes for eating – healthily and easily – outside this summer. So pack your sunscreen and your shades, and enjoy some grub outside!

Prevent coffee panic: Plan ahead!

I don’t have much of a daily routine or predictability around what I do or do not do on a consistent basis. Aside from walking my dog, practicing yoga and, uh, stuff like bathing or toothbrushing, there’s not too much else that can be called a daily ritual…with one minor exception: my love for coffee.

Those who know me know I’ve always got coffee cups strewn around my space, both personal and professional (in the interest of making good environmental decisions, I drink from reusable coffee mugs, too).

This morning, I did the unthinkable abandon of ritual: I changed my order at the coffee shop. You see, when I stop for my morning, mid-morning and afternoon java, I tend to go to Starbucks as they are all spitting distance from my office – and consistent coffee shop equals consistent ordering…until this morning. Feeling frisky, I decided to change my order from a grande coffee with steamed soy to something fancy with more…frills.

There was one slight problem. I had memorized my usual order, so when I started to speak the new words of my familiar language, I kiiiiind of freaked out. I mean, I may have had a (minor) panic attack because I just couldn’t…get it…straight. I don’t know if I said ‘medium,’ ‘milk,’ ‘shot,’ or what, but the barista looked at me as if I had puked on her counter. (Oops.)

So, for all of you who are a little worried about how to order when going to Starbucks, feel free to check out this handy-dandy guide:wikihow. Prevent coffee panic: Plan ahead!

Manbabies

I hope you know about Manbabies already. If you don’t, take five seconds to visit the site, laugh hysterically and get a little creeped out.

Solid gold.

100, 200, 300…

So those lovable 100-calorie packs of your favorite delicious-yet-probably-not-that-diet-friendly packaged food? Not as innocent as they seem.

According to this post from SmarterFitter, new research points the finger at these guys for actually making people eat more, not less. And, notes the blog, the expense for these tiny treats really adds up – both for your wallet and your waistline.
