I don’t have much of a daily routine or predictability around what I do or do not do on a consistent basis. Aside from walking my dog, practicing yoga and, uh, stuff like bathing or toothbrushing, there’s not too much else that can be called a daily ritual…with one minor exception: my love for coffee.
Those who know me know I’ve always got coffee cups strewn around my space, both personal and professional (in the interest of making good environmental decisions, I drink from reusable coffee mugs, too).
This morning, I did the unthinkable abandon of ritual: I changed my order at the coffee shop. You see, when I stop for my morning, mid-morning and afternoon java, I tend to go to Starbucks as they are all spitting distance from my office – and consistent coffee shop equals consistent ordering…until this morning. Feeling frisky, I decided to change my order from a grande coffee with steamed soy to something fancy with more…frills.
There was one slight problem. I had memorized my usual order, so when I started to speak the new words of my familiar language, I kiiiiind of freaked out. I mean, I may have had a (minor) panic attack because I just couldn’t…get it…straight. I don’t know if I said ‘medium,’ ‘milk,’ ‘shot,’ or what, but the barista looked at me as if I had puked on her counter. (Oops.)
